Bruges, Belgium
After Christmas, Eli and I decided to travel to Bruges, Belgium (about a 5 hour train ride). We wanted to go where fries were invented (no, they were not invented in France) and try some Belgian waffles and chocolate. We only missed one train connection, but luckily there was another one only 11 minutes later. Once we arrived (after 9pm), we checked into our hotel and went and checked out the Christmas markets. The next day, we joined a walking tour to learn about the history of Bruges and to see the popular sights. After that tour, Eli decided we needed to do a boat tour so we could see what we missed by traveling in the canals. We finally got to try our first waffles and fries around 1pm that day and they were scrumptious! My tummy is currently rumbling just thinking about them!
This was our hotel lobby and breakfast area.
We ate breakfast at the hotel before heading to the walking tour.
This is where the nuns live.
This is a famous brewery because it paid several million dollars to run a pipeline underground to send the beer to where it is bottled.
This is the skinniest street in Bruges that used to lead to the bathhouses and to naughtier things as well.
Waffles everywhere!
This is called the kissy kissy bridge because so many weddings are photographed on the bridge.
An artist made these to depict the horsemen that were written about in Revelations.
This is where Colin Farrell jumped off into the water in the movie In Bruges.
We had to duck our heads to get under this bridge.
Finally---what we came for!
These fries were AMAZING! I might have gained a few pounds after eating them.
I am not a marzipan fan--but it was everywhere as well.
More waffles! Don't judge.
The chocolate was pretty spectacular as well.
That evening we decided to go ice skating!
We then went back to the Christmas markets for more hot chocolate and spiked apple cider.
The next morning, our train wasn't to leave until 3pm, so we had a quick bite to eat and then hiked out to the windmills that have been there since the 16th century. They were so neat! We also ate an amazing lunch before heading out.
We grabbed a stick waffle dipped in chocolate for a late morning snack.
We also toured the cathedral to see the tapestries in the front.
As in all of my travels, we missed our beds, but we were sad to leave such a beautiful city!
