Curb Appeal with Old Base Housing

Our house on base is old. ..and they refuse to paint my shutters. As spring began, I wanted to make this house more pleasing to the eye with beautiful flowers! I have never planted flowers, and I tried to pick out ones that would grow well in the shade. We purchased window boxes for all of the windows and I knew that I didn't want plants in the top boxes that needed watering everyday. This led to having different plants in the top boxes vs. the bottom windows. We also bought 2 hanging flower pots, and added lights to our pergola.

An added bonus was when our 4 beautiful Hydrangea bushes went into full bloom. I love how each flower has a different shade or hue. They are gorgeous.

It was frustrating when our hanging pots of Petunias did not get an equal amount of sunlight. The one on the left grew and flourished, while the one on the right died within the week even with watering nightly. I decided to go back to the store and pulled the Petunias out and put them in the pots in the back of the house where the sun would be on them daily. I picked these flowers out below, and they have done well so far! I don't remember what they are called. They may be Impatiens.

The Petunias in the flower boxes went crazy really quickly.
These grew a lot slower, but now (I'm typing this in July--they are very large).
