February Projects
So I was really excited to paint these two pieces white. I knew it would lighten the space so much and I have been so tired of all of my DARK furniture. Slowly over the last year, we have been transforming our house to be more "light". Unfortunately, I made my first big mistake when redoing furniture. I had plans to buy Annie Sloan's chalk paint, and was frustrated with the price tag. In speaking with someone, I found out that they use regular, flat, interior paint and it has worked fine for them. Score! I would save so much money! This buffet was already pretty rough to the feel, and did not have any polyurethane on it, so I only did a tiny light sanding (rather Danny did a light sanding). The stain was almost gummy coming off and that should have stopped me right there. These pieces came from Thailand, and I'm not sure what kind of stain was used, but it always kind of rubbed off the first couple of years we had it. Maybe its the wood that was used. Who knows. Anyways, the paint went on fine, but peels off at the slightest bump and scratch. I also did two coats, then put 2 coats of polycrylic, only to find out that the paint soaked in more. I should have done 3 coats, but it was too late. So as much as I'm super frustrated about how this turned out, I still think it looks great. I just know (and dread) that our next move will cause so many gouges out of the paint that I will have to re-sand and repaint when we get there. This time I will use chalk paint or a latex furniture paint. I learned my lesson and I'm kicking myself for it. Without knowing any of this, though, I think most would agree that it looks nice!
I also spray painted these candlesticks. They had been white before, so I now needed them to be a contrast to white. I love how nice the grey color looks.
He will eventually screw these together, but I wanted him to wait until our next move. Each hall closet in the houses we have lived in are incredibly different sizes.
Our front entry closet we have here is tiny, so we stacked two on the bottom and one on the shelf above.

2nd project: I asked Danny to make me 3 cubicle shelves to hold hats, gloves, and scarves in the closet. I was frustrated with the mess that would appear every winter with boys running in and out of the house to play. Hopefully these cubicles will encourage a certain two boys to stay more organized, or they are going to have to deal with the wrath of their momma.
The plans Danny used had really short and square cubicles. I asked him to create them longer and bigger. He did a fantastic job! I stained them after he was done.
