DIY Projects GALORE!
It never stops in our house! I love projects! Danny was planning on surprising me and created this wood tray thing out of pallets. He had plans to write something about fall and set it next to the pallet pumpkins he made last month. It was supposed to be a sign. It wasn't coming out how he expected it to, so I found this beauty earlier this month sitting on his workbench in the garage. I told him I loved it how it was and displayed it on my table for fall. I love how it added height to the pumpkins I had on the table.
I also decided to make a giant hot pad for my big rectangle Pyrex dish. I had been wanting to do this ever since I saw a picture of one on pinterest. I dug through my old material from when I made a bunch of pot holders last Christmas and I was excited to see that I still had enough to make this.
Okay, I know this isn't technically a "house DIY project", but it was still doing something new. I decided to make egg noodles for the first time. This is a traditional dish for Thanksgiving in my family on both my Mom and Dad's side.
I had some friends over for a craft morning in mid-November, so Danny helped me the week up to the event. I found a cute project off of pinterest. He cut out 45-6x6inch wooden blocks (from wood leftover from the table). I then painted them all with black chalk paint. He then spent a whole afternoon sanding down the edges of all of the blocks to make them look more worn and distressed. My friend Melisa printed out snowflake stencils for everyone to use. Each person received 3 blocks, and they painted on the snowflakes with white chalk paint. After it was dry, I went around and put a thin layer of polycrylic over the snowflakes. They turned out to be super adorable! I will post more about that morning in a future post.
LOVE THEM!!!!!!
For the next project, I asked Danny for a long wooden crate to hold 6-1 quart BALL jars. When he finished it, he stained it with the color of jacobean. He also found adorable handles from Lowes and added those to each end of the crate. While he was doing this, I was inside painting the 6 jars. I painted them white, barn red, and olive green. Once dry, I distressed them a tad. I then found some Christmas greenery from Hobby Lobby for 50% off and stuck those in the jars. This ended up being a beautiful table centerpiece for the holiday!
I love the handles he added!
I also pulled out my sewing machine at the beginning of November and went to town on a handful of fun Christmas projects. First off, I was tired of our old Christmas tree skirt. I set off for JoAnn's and found a bunch of plaids and festive material.
I cut out 10 triangles (I found out later I could gotten away with 8-9) and sewed them together. I wanted a "rag quilt" look so after sewing it all together, I flipped it upside down and cut notches all around the seams. I then added a liner to the other side.
I liked how it turned out---simple but cute.
Next, I made my sister tree garland from the other material I had purchased and another one for myself with the leftover material from the tree skirt. I used a fun festive red rope for hers and twine for mine. This was time consuming because I made 12 trees in her garland, and 15 trees in mine (this was because I had 5 different fabrics and doing 10 was too little...so I had to go to 15. I had 6 fabrics for my sister's, and 12 trees ended up looking perfect).
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Next, I made my sister an ornament pillow with the same material I had made her tree garland with. I then made 2 pillows for myself with the same material I used for my tree garland. I even put zippers in the cases in case I wanted to change the cover for a different season.
Hannah's pillow.
One of my pillows.
Last, but not least, I made coasters for both my sister and I using the same coordinating fabrics. Hannah's coasters.
My coasters.
I sewed around each pennant like the picture below, after taking the previous pictures.
